How bad is my pentium D?

how bad is my pentium D to the new core2duos, i mean the benchmarks show quite a drastic difference but they game with super comps up to 1600res. Will it make much of a difference to me as i usually dont mind gaming at 1024/1280 res's? the chip is also a lot hotter than the core2's will that have an effect on its life/stability? thanks

The chips are designed to run at those temps so lifespan and stability shouldn't be an issue unless they are running very hot (i.e. 80+C 24x7 would dramatically shorten the lifespan)...

Your CPU is about 1/3rd the performance of a core 2 duo at 3gig, however unless your playing at 1600+ res or have a graphics card faster than a 7900GTO/GTX then its not going to be holding you back that much... with a 7800GT a core 2 duo would be wasted for gaming. If you do a lot of media/rendering work or similiar tho then a core 2 duo would give you a big performance increase.

SiSoft Sandra gives similar results to Tom's Hardware - about 18,000 for the 820 and 25,000 for the E6400 IIRC.

Basically only upgrade when you need more performance. If your games are running fast enough for you then keep what you have. Don't get sucked into the upgrade cycle just because something new has come out, been there and spent a crap load of money finding out that its not worth it.
