My computer was making a strange clicky noise, so I looked inside and found that the noise was coming from the fan on my PSU (Hyper 580 modular) which was not starting up fully.

Now it's stopped altogether. Should I stop using the computer? Is this a serious worry? Do you think I can replace the fan?

i'm worried i'll burn the house down!

I'm tend to be reluctant to make recommendations on other people's hardware choices. However, I'd strongly recommend that you dump or exchange the Hiper PSU. They're pretty and shiny and the cable connectors on them are very convenient but they're unreliable. A polished turd is still a turd. I had one last year and fortunately it started to make noises as soon as I put it into my case and I was able to replace it with a slightly more expensive PSU.

How old is the PSU?

The fan can be reasonably easily replaced (google it!) - though with extreme caution! They retain charge in those capacitors for a quarter of an hour or so. Just unplug it - cycle the power a few times. Wait.

Though why don't you just RMA it?

I would advise against opening up your PSU unless you know what you are doing, as mentioned they retain charge for some time after they have been turned off ;) As suggested just RMA the PSU or better still get a better one, Hiper's seem to be dying atm :(

I think I got it late 2005, so it's not new.

Should I contact Hiper? I dont have the recipt anymore, but do have the box (quite handy!) and all cables etc.

Don't think I'll open it up though, sounds a bit dangerous!
