Hi,

I'm new to osx and over the last few months have installed lots of apps. My dock has become very cluttered.

I've had a look through the mac desktop thread and can see a lot of you have stacks for your apps. I've dragged my applications folder onto the dock to create a stack and removed a lot of the icons from the main dock. However I have now got the same problem in my stack.... i.e. its got lots of icons and is cluttered. How can i organise this?

Can i create folders inside my applications folder and drag the apps around into those? OR do i need to create a folder elsewhere and then just create shortcuts to the apps etc.

What i'm after really is a few folders called things like 'web', 'photography', 'office' etc and then just have the apps organised in those with shortcuts on my dock to the folders.

If there's a better way to keep my apps organised please let me know too.

Cheers

The way I organise my Applications folder is leaving/installing all official Apple applications in index of the Applications folder. All third party applications goes inside a folder called Extras located in the Applications folder. Both folders have their own stacks on the dock which as a result provides far less clutter in both dock and Applications folder :p

You can install applications anywhere however some applications, for example MAMP requires to be installed in the index of the Applications folder.

I mainly use Spotlight as an app launcher now and have just frequently used/most useful apps in the dock then have the Apps folder as a stack.

Be careful moving apps like Apple ones etc. as they may not update correctly if moved to a different place.

Quicksilver, Quicksilver, Quicksilver :D

I have common apps I use daily on the dock, and the rest in the applications folder (displayed as a popout grid as an icon on the dock)

I have the icons that I use daily in categories;

Web ¦ Music ¦ Video ¦ File Transfer ¦ Work

I don't use Firefox anymore, though
