I only really use my system for gaming and at the moment i have a core 2 duo E8400 OC'd at 3.6. Would i see a big increase in games if i changed to AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core & AM3 board/ram?

id go for x2550, ive had 3 , two have unlocked to 3.8ghz quad core

You need a certain mobo for that right? and how exactly do you unlock the extra 2 cores? And would it be worth it in terms of my current spec?

i think you would see a nice increase yes, a gigabyte ud4p or ud5p woud be good, set acc in bios to hybrid and auto, bingo :)

Not worth it, i certainly wouldnt get a 550, as @3.6Ghz your E8400 is faster than a 550 overclocked to 3.8Ghz.

I can run my 550 as a X3 tri core Cpu, effectively a 720, and in current games theres not much difference....

If you want a noticable increase in performance, get a Quad....a 955 and OC it to 3.6Ghz....a 550 is a lottery when it comes to having a successful 4 core unlock.

Alternatively clock your e8400 higher at which point it'll be as fast/quicker than changing board and processor to amd
