How big of an improvement would it make...?

It currently takes me around 4-5 hours to convert a bluray rip with all the settings I like.

I currently run a [email protected] and 4GB DDR2 1066Mhz.

So let's say I upgraded to a Sandybridge at 5Ghz. How much time do you think it would shave off the conversion time? An hour, two maybe? Or not as much.

I'm currently using handbrake to do my conversions. Does this utilise my GPU, I believe my 6970 has DXVA built in to help with conversions. Similar sort of thing to offloading the playback of 1080p onto the gpu from the cpu.

Basically I'm looking for suggestions/recommendations on how to speed up my conversions.

Cheers.

No doubt it would, however I think 5 hours is good... I've known this sort of converting (high quality MKV.) to take up to 12+ hours.. so Your 4-5 average is respectable.

PS. You've got an impressive OC on you're Q6600.

It should halve your conversion times, though hex core phenoms are noticeably faster clock for clock due to the extra cores.

Looking at this benchmark comparison, the 2500K beats the phenom hex core quite comfortably. If it was a lot cheaper than I may have been tempted, but when their both the same price... it's a no brainer.

Anandtech benchmarks also show the i5 2500 beating the i7 2600 and x4 beating the x6 in a number of situations so I think they are somewhat erroneous, other websites like toms hardware show the x6 beating the i5 series.

Ahh, just goes to show you. So what one would you pick up, a 2500K or a x6 Phenom. Video conversion, the odd game, photoshop, lightroom, adobe premiere?

X6 Phenom should be better at most of that list except the games, but a 2500k isnt exactly any kind of a slouch and also overclocks more.

I wouldnt get anything other than a 2500k right now though.

5Ghz on a 2500k 24/7 would be pushing it a bit much, 1.4v for sustained amounts of time and extra heat.

4.6-4.8Ghz is a lot more viable :)

(Currently 4.5 @ 1.264v, 65c or so)

The 2500k, it will be superior in applications that are not embarrassingly parallel, which is most of them. The overclocking ability is probably better too. As said above though, 4.6GHz is more realistic for a stable overclock.
