Installed 7 on 3 PC's over the last week including my own and it's taking hours to even pickup updates. What have Microsoft done and why?

Currently using WSUS offline but even that is taking hours making the process rather irritating.

So I set the convenience update running last night at 9:45, went to bed to get up for work this morning and it was in exactly the same state as it was last night, not a single update identified or even installed in over 8 hours.

Grrrr.

What's going on with these updates? Trying to install win 7 and it just won't update. Tried the link above and I get a message saying 'it does not apply to this pc'!

Been trying to update my newly built HTPC now since 29th. As a test I just left the machine for the last 48 hours in a 'checking for updates' state. I looked at it this morning and its still checking for updates and hasn't installed a single one.

I've just cancelled it and given up as I'm obvioulsy not really bothered about security.

As it stands I am currently VM'ing Linux, if I can find the programs I need and support for my hardware then it's bye bye M$

I'd be all over Linux if Lightroom existed on the platform and if gaming was as broad as it is on Windows but unfortunately as they are my main uses it kinda rules it out.

I used Autopatcher in the end and it worked.

Well I've given up trying to update my old laptop now.
Wiped it on Thursday to install an SSD and left it to update for 2 full days and it still didnt pick up a single update, have tried a few of the tip mentioned in here today and still no luck so have installed Ubuntu instead.

Took about 10 minutes total to install, a further 5 minutes to update and its up an running. Has made my old Core 2 laptop run and feel like a new machine to be honest, wish I'd done it a couple of days ago.

There is a 5 min fix for windows update not working on windows 7 - I reinstalled last week, Googled the problem and fixed straight away with 290 critical updates!!

Please enlighten us, I tried 7 different options none worked.

I reloaded Windows 7 onto a laptop recently and it was stuck in checking for updates forever.

Heres what I did to sort it -

Go to control panel, system and security, windows update, change settings...and... in the drop down box, set it to never install updates. Restart computer. Ignore any warnings about windows update being turned off. Then first install

KB3020369

https://support.microsoft.com/kb/3020369

then install KB3172605:

https://support.microsoft.com/kb/3172605

Restart your computer, go back to control panel, system and security, windows update, and turn on windows updates (to whatever delivery option you prefer). Then click "check for updates".

After 15 mins checking for updates it found them all and started downloading.
.
Just cleaned my father in laws laptop and bless you, worked straight away.
