How broken is windows update for W7 users?

W7 update was borked last time I did an install a couple of months ago...was only to get a win10 license on that machine but I had to fight Windows update for ages.

WSUS offline did the trick, finally got it updated and 10 installed.

Ive just set mine to Never and rebooted, just to stop the bugger endlessley checking again, and hogging my memory.

Its funny, as when i finally managed to get last months down, it was lightning at checking, finding and installing any.

EDIT: They could be bundling all the telemetry updates in with the rollups.

I've just installed the latest updates on 8.1 and was relieved to see these options are still intact...

I thought they might take them away and make it more like windows 10. :p

I reloaded Windows 7 onto a laptop recently and it was stuck in checking for updates forever.

Heres what I did to sort it -

Go to control panel, system and security, windows update, change settings...and... in the drop down box, set it to never install updates. Restart computer. Ignore any warnings about windows update being turned off. Then first install

KB3020369

https://support.microsoft.com/kb/3020369

then install KB3172605:

https://support.microsoft.com/kb/3172605

Restart your computer, go back to control panel, system and security, windows update, and turn on windows updates (to whatever delivery option you prefer). Then click "check for updates".

After 15 mins checking for updates it found them all and started downloading.

I've actually taken the frustrated step of disabling Windows Update on both my PC and server >:(

Hear server's fans kicking in > log into server > oh quelle surprise, svchost has been using 50% CPU for hours and never finds any updates.

For anyone wanting to block the Telemetry, SpyBot Anti-Beacon has been updated to now include Win7/8/8.1

Yeah im still set on Never for the time being, as you just don't know what they are going to be installing on your computer now, plus theres the updates that break your OS, how are you going to get them off when they are all lumped together now.

I actually turned it back on last night for a few hours... 50% CPU usage for the duration.. and no updates.

Back to off again :D:rolleyes:
