How can a bluetooth device just be paired up with something but still connected?

The reason I ask, is that I have my phone paired up with my pc, so windows locks when I walk away... But surely it needs tobe connected to the pc to be able todo that?
 
Isn't it locking as soon as it loses connection? That's how it's supposed to work.
Yes thats how it works, but the phone is only paired not connected with the pc. So how is it doing it when the phone Isn't actually connected, because my phone says its "NOT CONNECTED" with my pc?

Ah right, you didn't mention it wasn't connected already.

Even if disconnected they can still see each other, so even if it's not connected the PC will still be able to tell if the phone is in range or not.
Ahhh, I thought the pairing thing was just so you dont have to go through the hassle of manually connecting the device everytime?
