I am doing some research at the moment, and have a questionnaire type form. An example of how the questions are written/coded is :

What is your favourite colour ?

A.Blue
B.Red
C.Green

What I want to do is have an excel spreadsheet, which has a column titled colour, and then just put in each descending row, A, B, C, B etc etc; to indicate what that person has ticked on the questionnaire.

Is there a formula that I can use at the end to count the number of A's, number of B's etc etc ?

if your using excel 2003, use the inbuilt help, it is actually helpfull now!

Access would probably be a faster and more efficient way of going about it. You could also display it prettily, and I'm guessing, if it's for coursework, you'd probably get more cudos.

If I want to work out how many times the letter 'A' crops up in the group of cells, say, D4 to D40 , what would the countif formula be ?
