Easiest way is remove the drive from the case, put it in a pc and install that way. Windows 8 seems reasonably happy running from removable media, windows 7 not so much.
With a bit of googeling and effort it can be done, just don't expect it to be simple. The only thing a kernel hates loosing more than the page-file (which also won't install on removable media) is all it's files when someone steps on a cable.

Is it a USB 2 HDD? If so, don't bother, there just isn't enough bandwidth.

Possibly. I'd expect a normal SATA HDD inside so you should just be able to put it your computer. That should sort your driver issues too. The USB2 interface is relatively slow these days.

It is likely to happen if you're using a USB device. Have you tried it for a normal SATA drive?
