How can I fix this? Painting issue

Morning everyone,

I've been doing up our bathroom over christmas, which was fine until this happened! I sanded all the walls, gave them probably three coats of white, and when they were dry, taped them up and did the green stripes. With the stripes, I painted white on the tape first and then when that was dry, did the green over. Worked well as I didn't get much bleed at all.

Instead, as I peeled off the tape, chunks of primarily white paint came with it. I really don't know how to sensible fix this. Pictures below of some of the problem spots, but not all. Really killed my enthusiasm!

It's almost like the coat the house builders put on isn't bonded to the wall.

Could someone give me some advice on how to fix this?

Cheers,

What type of tape did you use? I would maybe consider a fine filler for the gaps/cracks then touch up with the green / white paint.

Sadly i had similar cracking/peeling when i removed masking tape on skirting after painting the walls.

I used three different tapes! The first was the best one, some cheap cheap masking tape which didn't pull anything away. Ran out of that, had to use some stronger stuff which I'd bought. Then I buoght some yellow frog tape hoping it would work better, and it's just as bad as number two.

I think that sounds sensible. I'll have to pick up some filler. Any recommendations?

That stuff would do the job. I had heard good things about frog tape as well but i laso heard horror stories. I would guess it depends on the paints as well possibly.

Yeah unfortunately it's two problems! One, the wall repair. Two, how to put the stripes back without pulling off even more paint. I think I'll just end up either cutting very thing strips of it or only fixing it down where the actual line is.

Ouch

Your going to need to stop that just peeling back before you can fill it.
You may be able to limit the damage with some diluted pva brushed along the edges and the paint pushed back down.
Else yoru probably going to need to create a hard line round it (eg cut with a stanley knife) to try to get a sound edge to fill up to.

As far as filler I would get the screwfix fine surface filler. But either add some extra water to it before use, or dampen the wall down with a sponge, or maybe even both.
Thats going to suck the moisture out really quickly and make it hard to fill well

Thanks for the tip. I'll do that. My father suggested gluing it down as well, but I wasn't sure. I wouldn't mind too much creating a hard edge. I suppose once you've got a couple of coats of paint on it, you won't be able to see that.

Any idea why it might have happened in the first place?

FYI tesa tape I find better than alternatives.

I recommend toupret powder filler, I wouldn't use ready mix anymore. This is easier to sand, easier to put on.

As per above

Sand back peeling
Filler
Get filler flush and sand back if required
Repaint

Thanks for the advice. This has dragged on so long now though that I don't want to wait for stuff to arrive!
I think can get toupret on screwfix.

Did you paint underneath the tape first with the white colour? Means there is no bleeding and gives a tighter edge

Example close up of mine

Nice! Yeah I did exactly that. Bleed is not the issue. Where the paint hasn't been pulled off, the line is brilliant.

Another question - I’ve got to put some silicone sealant back. I don’t think it actually serves any purpose other than to cover some minor sins. What should I get? Caulk, or some kind of bathroom sealant? This is the bathroom, if I didn’t mention it, though we don’t use this one much so it’s very rarely humid in there.

If it's on the skirting and not intended to be a splash area, caulk. Silicone can't be painted (very well at least)

I had a problem with paint peeling off one of the walls in my Kitchen. I ended up scraping the pain back to solid areas where it was properly adhered to the wall, then I used Zinsser Guardz to prime the wall which sealed/stuck down any slightly loose paint edges and gave a very stable surface which the next coat of paint keyed to very nicely and the problem was solved.
