How can I get my screen replaced without paying a fortune?

My sisters laptop isn't being used any more because the screen is broke. It's also the only laptop I've seen without a VGA connection so I can't use a monitor with it either. It's a Toshiba Satellite M50-161 with a 14" screen. How much would it cost to get it replaced assuming it's no longer under warranty?

Would I have to go through Toshiba or is it possible to get them fixed by anyone who knows what they're doing?

Sorry, I don't know muh about laptops.

Thanks for any help.

Probably best bet is to find the part number you want and buy it yourself.

Its the cheapest way of doing it but you would have to fit it yourself. Its very easy though.

And because im in a good mood, heres 3 LCD's that will fit your laptop perfectly.

K000027820 - LCD PANEL - 14 WXGA SAMSUNG- Manufacturing # LTN140W1-L01

K000030710 - LCD PANEL - 14 WXGA LG - Manufacturing # LP140WX1-TL03

K000027840 - LCD PANEL- 14 WXGA CPT - Manufacturing # CLAA140WA01

EDIT, or theres a faulty one for sale on the common place to look.

I have no idea how I'd do that though.

Do you have a link to any guides? Or should I google it?

Thanks by the way lads. I didn't know I could change it myself.

edit: hmm, rather expensive at £100. I could probably buy a better used laptop for that price haha.

£100 is very cheap for an LCD. Plus the M50 is not a bad laptop really.

Fitting it is easy. Just remove the screws that hold the bexel in (behind rubber things) then unclip the bezel. Then its a case of taking out the lcd and putting the new one in not forgetting to plug the LCD cable in and inverter cable in.

I see.

Thanks, I'll have a look into it.

I think I found the problem. The screen wasn't plugged in. It won't stay in now because all of the tape has lost its stick, so it just falls out with very little pressure. I'm talking about the thin, ribbon type cable, not the 2 pin white small cable near the laptop speakers.

If it was slightly unplugged, would it cause the laptop to go completely black, or would it show weird colours like when you press your finger against an LCD? Because the latter was happeneing, it was showing weird colours, so I might not even need to replace it if I can get it back in.

Is it safe to use normal cellotape? Or would I need electrical tape or something like that?

normally if its fully out you get a white screen, if its halfway you can get odd colours and stuff, any tape should be ok, be carefull with the connectors though they are quite delicate

Hmm, the screen still doesn't work.

If I press hard enough in the top left corner the picture appears though. But it's not usuable because I have to press really hard.

Is the screen broke then?

Could it be the ribbon cable that is faulty? That can't be replaced though, by the looks of it.

It sounds like the connector on the screen is very loose. Normally the cable isnt the problem.

Try removing the cable a few times to clean the contacts. Then make sure its plugged in nicely with some tape.

If all fails, looks like youll need a new LCD.

Yeah I tried about 3 times. It was the same, I still have the press really hard to get a picture.

Ah well.

Thanks for your help.
