¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I've recently bought one of the older Macbooks which only has analogue out for the sound.

No digital, which is a bit of a pain as I was hoping to hook it up to a DAC.

Is there anyway of getting digital sound out? I was thinking about buying some sort of USB soundcard, but I guess it wouuld have to be compatible with OSX.

Are there any that exist or will I have to start saving for a macbook pro?

Which MacBook is that, a 32bit Core Duo one? I thought they all had combined headphone/optical out.

The headphone socket is a optical out too, you will need a 3.5mm jack to toslink cable (cheap on the bay). I use this to connect the macbook to my AV amp and it runs surround sound perfectly.

This is with the original CoreDuo Macbook.
