Hi there,
I will soon be going to uni and would like to take some tech with me. I would like to use the uni's internet connection, but I want to make sure that no one else can access my stuff like my chromecast.

Is this possible?
thanks,
Sam

OK brilliant, so it will be possible with jsut a router then, i am hoping that i will be able to do it with an old Netgear WGR614 Wireless-G Router from sky which I have over written the firmware on ...
if anyone out there knows this router would it be possible to use it?
and would it need dhcp on or off?

Thanks, I though that wouls be the case.
On the router that I would be using there is no specific input ethernet port as when it is in normal operation the input is from the telephone line.
is that still ok, or would i probably need a router as apposed to a modem?

OK brilliant,
Please could you recommend a "student" priced option that shouldn't be too hard to setup?

Ahh brilliant, If you could give me a link to the document that would be brilliant, meanwhile I will try to find one the isnt coming from the USA...
or can i look for any ddwrt router to do it with?

ohh right ok then,
is there anything that I can put on an old netbook, like some linix based system that can do this all for me? it has an ethernet port, so i would get another usb ethernet adapter and the netbook also has wifi?
Seems like the perfect use for a slow machine

What possible benefit would the OP have in configuring such a complicated system?

OP, all you need is a simple cable router such as this Asus.

So all i would need to do is plug this in and it would work ? with no one being able to access my devices from the outside of my own mini network?
