Excuse my naevity, but. I would lke to be able to connect a Mac to an LCD TV and play MKV files using iPad as the remote say.
Obviously it is easy to just connect a HD with all the films straight to the TV but the media player function on a Samsung TV only lists the films and shows no graphics or genres etc.
I would like to be able to install some media player function on the Mac which resides in a bedroom and access it in the lounge and wirelessly communicate via my iPad to play on the TV.
Is this achievable?
BTW, I say I, but I am investigating the possibilities for my son. Thanks.

I would recommend Plex and then get the app for the iPad.

edit - completely missed the mac in one room, tv in another. Mine assumed all in one room. My bad.

I have just found that app whilst browsing. Bear with me if I ask silly Q's. Would I connect the TV to internet, install Plex. Then where would I install the HD a) still on the Mac or b) to the USB port of the TV?

So you have the TV in the Lounge and the Mac in the bedroom ... and you want to control it with the iPad.

Well Plex now does have a DLNA service built into it's server component or I believe that there is an "app" which can be installed on some models of Samsung TV's but I have not tried either of these so I can't say how well they will work (I just use a Mac Mini connected to the TV by HDMI).

As Kol says you can control it with the iOS Plex app which has a remote function but personally I have only had mixed success with it personally using it that way (streams well to the iPad though :))

edit: regarding your new post, Plex would need to index and catalogue the media hence I would suggest that the HD would need to be connected to the Mac.
