how can i set up a remote desktop....

do you mean rdp? It depends on if that protocol (tcp 3389) is allowed out of your work network. At home just forward incoming to your lan ip.

Would u care to elaborate on what you did please?

I am keen to use RDC from the outside world, works great internally but I can't figure out what I need to do to access this while I am away?

I read several pages here:

Working Remotely with Windows XP

But came a bit unstuck when it got to the VPN bit? I don't know how to make a VPN connection and I don't really wanna buy some third party software if WinXP Pro has all I need to get it working (well with a bit of know how anyway!).

Any tips please? :)

No need for VPN, just forward port 3389 on your router, then when you are "outside" connect to your external ip using the remote desktop client.

Oh that doesn't sound to bad?

I'm not really familiar with *port forwarding* but I have a section on my Be-Box called Game or Application sharing that has an entry for *Microsoft Remote Desktop* that involves something to do with port 3389.

Ok so I have done that so all I need to do now is enter the I.P address of my ISP and I'm in?

Thats the bit I don't get? how does the internet know my machine apart from all the others if I just use the I.P from my ISP? :o

[edit] or is that I.P address unique to my router? (assigned by BE DHCP?).

That game section will foward that port to a particular computer, you just need to set it up for yours.

So that, any traffic on that port from the internet is sent to your pc, rather than to any other one on the network.

forward port 3389 to the ip address of your computer ie 192.168.1.2 , make sure your pc has a static ip address or this may casue problems at a later date

open widows remote desktop connection and put in your IP address ie. 83.7.130.132 and connect

your router should be able to tell you your ip

I wouldnt personally open up RDP to the outside world, too many script kiddies with their port scanners about.

I'd probably go with logmein.

Or teamviewer, but you'll need to open the client up before you leave work and jot down the id.

why not apply source addresses to the firewall policy in the router? easier than using third party software to do the job of RDP.

you will need to know the IP addresses / subnets where you will be connecting from, and also these will need to be static IP addresses.
