How can I stop my folders "reverting to default" ?

I'm on Windows Vista 64, and I have a lot of folders on my pc that I like to customize ( move folders within folders to the bottom of the window for quick finding, customize the vies, how folders / files are displayed within them etc .. ).

But all my windows keep resetting to default, it's really annoying

It used to happen once every month or so, but now it happens about every 4th time I open a folder !!

I'll set up a pictures folder, customize it, and after opening / closing it about 3 - 5 times EVERY folder on my computer resets including the window size, my computer, games folder, everything ...

Surely this doesn't just happen to me?

Is there a fix? Whats the cause of this?

It is a small thing, but very annoying lol.

Most fixes do not work long term, simply because they and MS have REG Entries in wrong place (yes MS made a boob).

These work, 2nd link is corrected using 1st link (the 1st link peep was one to find/fix it perm) :)

Use whatever one you find worked better and easier to follow.

I finally sorted it using the 1st link before the 2nd one updated it.

EDIT : I see link 1 now has a Auto REG for it, no manual info anymore, lets hope its is the same as it works 100%.

And it will break them all eventually, "Applying To All" was the worse mistake I ever made, even my Drive Icons were super sized Thumbnails after that.

It is a MS BUG, you cannot avoid it if you put say a Picture into the Video folder, it becomes like a Picture folder.

The special folders by default on Vista although having names and pretty pictures on them are not set to Picture or Video Template etc unlike on XP.

Think yourself simply lucky you have avoided it so far, but word of warning once it happens 1st time it will repeat more frequently and you will be sick to the back teeth fixing all your folders again.

At least its now fixable permanently. :)

A similar, but possibly reversed, problem:

On several occasions, I need to view all files in a particular folder - all hidden, all system - everything. It doesn't matter what I do, the settings are saved for EVERY folder, including the desktop - not just the one folder I'm accessing. I don't want system files showing up on the desktop - is there something I'm missing, or is this yet another Vista "feature?"

Hmm weird, I know this is a PIA but reset your Folders completely in the Control Panel.

You will need set up your own look/layout again.

Just dug this thread back out, and replying back to say that fix did not work ;(

It worked from the 13th October till now. All my folders have reset.

Maybe the fix does work and I downloaded an MS update that put the registry back the way it was, who knows xD
