How can I stop Windows Update downloading Windows 10?

As title. I have a Windows 8.1 Pro x64 machine I'm wanting to keep that way. I have already uninstalled the annoying little systray icon nagging about updating, and the broken Windows 10 related update which changes the context menus a funky purple colour (KB3035583). I have also hidden the 'Upgrade to Windows 10' update from within Windows Update.

Despite this, I have some urgent/critical updates showing (.net framework stuff) and whenever I try to install them Windows Update begins with 'Downloading Windows 10'.

Is there something I've missed? I don't want to download Windows 10 or upgrade to it. Is there a way to bypass this forceware and just get my normal Win 8.1 updates? As I said I've already hidden the two Win10 updates which the internet tells me is all I should need to do. Pretty annoying that MS are pushing this 'free' update so hard that it's making earlier versions unuseable. To even go to the extent of hiding Win10 upgrades and nags inside Win8 patches is laughable.

TIA.

Already done that and it's still happening. Wish I'd stuck with Linux tbh but I needed a couple of mobo tools that are Windows specific. I check for updates, select the critical ones only (all of which relate to .net) and get the 'Downloading Windows 10' message. Windows eventually auto installed them after my OP (minus Windows 10) but I'm still in the same boat.

I have a handful of optional fixes, none of which relate in any way to Windows 10 that I can find (I checked the KB articles for every one). After ticking them and choosing to install, I once again get the 'Downloading Windows 10' message. Microsoft shove your Windows 10 and stop pushing it on me! Jeez. I wouldn't mind if you could properly disable telemetry and TAP adapters were working but atm upgrading isn't feasible for us.

Selecting the non-Windows-10 based updates:

Windows 10 tries to download anyway:

Any help appreciated. Thanks guys.

Every time you do updates always make sure the win 10 update is unticked

Maybe you skim read or only read the thread title (not a dig), but I already stated I had hidden the actual Win10 update and have uninstalled the related KB update for Win8.1. It's literally trying to download Windows 10 even if the only update selected is, for example, 'Update for .net framework v3' or 'Update for Microsoft Office blah blah'.

What's the issue with TAP adapters? I'm using one on 10 now - seems fine?

I had issues with the TAP adapters supplied by PIA and AirVPN, but this was some time ago. With all the extra data mining that can't be fully disabled in non-Enterprise editions I'm in no rush to upgrade. I'd rather not be in Windows at all without making things worse. :p

Check out this thread;

I have found it very useful as it lists what updates to avoid (or uninstall) for both 7 and 8.1, and have avoided (and also uninstalled) a fair few updates due to it.

Edited to add; that it also lists a fair few of the updates that pave the way for the upgrade to 10 as well as the telemetry updates, which are also useful.

Wow, that's a lot of updates. Thanks Mercurial. :)

Well I uninstalled the listed KB updates, rebooted, and still Windows Update tries to download and install Windows 10 even if the only 'update' selected is to install Silverlight or Skype. I'm seriously considering wiping the machine and just going back to Linux. We keep getting badgered to keep up to date with security patches because hakz0rs, but MS insist on hiding things in patches and forcing system upgrades you don't want. I literally can't update my system without also forcing a Windows 10 install. Screw them.

Delete everything in this folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, it will be easier if you create a shortcut to that folder on the desktop and then restart the pc and as the desktop starts quickly open the shortcut to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete everything and empty your recycle bin and make sure to remove the updates mentioned here http://www.infoworld.com/article/29...y-lock-on-windows-update-in-win7-and-8-1.html . Turn off automatic updates and hide the updates mentioned in the link. Restart the pc and all should be fine and update windows manually is the best way so that way you make sure the nasty updates mentioned in the link don't auto install.

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution has files in use once windows starts up fully so won't allow you to delete them, so do as above. The C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution contents will rebuild once you click update windows again and it will say you have never checked for updates when you try to update the first time, as if it is a new install for the windows updates section. (this method is also used to fix windows update when it plays up and also good idea to empty it from time to time as it fills the hard drive up with updates that have been installed)

It works as I have done this since they started pushing Windows 10, I have no need to update yet and can do without the headaches right now with it and maybe driver problems too. Will wait till they push a service pack or it comes close to the end of the free update time.

Yeah Microsoft has made some changes in terms of their profit source for Windows. Basically every Windows 10 "free" upgrade is actually fully paid for you by the NSA. It's why Microsoft is absolutely ramming this "free" upgrade down yours and everyone's throat by any means necessary. Every time someone signs up to upgrade for free, BAM Microsoft gets a little token for compliance straight from the defence budget. It's sad really and is only going to get worse as smaller and smaller organisations are approached with these highly lucrative government incentives.
