How can some web hosts offer so much space?

Try to get 1500GB of legal content which doesn't breach their terms and conditions (one of them is probably related to using it as a personal file store). Now try to upload it via your 256k up broadband connection. You can see why 99.99% of their customers will be using < 500MB regardless of the quota provided.

It's just a numbers game in a hugely competitive market and it's got really out of hand.

(Edit: They will, I hope, be running a SAN so the finite capacity of one drive isn't a problem)

it's not all about space though is it?

what's the use if it's a slow, overloaded server? and no backup when you've got probs.

i would only use an account like tha for video streaming, where very little cpu is needed, only space required.

I think a serious solution doesn't involve overselling slow full servers but provides a service with good speed, and a good team behind it. Might cost a bit more, but imo it's worth it.
