How can they replace the noise?

Through noise simulation? Put exhaust shaped speakers at the back of the car which play ur preffered engine tune when you put the foot down...for silent electric cars that is

Oil will not run out, it will merely become a substance used for recreation rather than essential day to day use.

Look at the horse and the transition over to first the steam engine, and now the internal combustion engine. Horses are far from extinct, we just dont use them for transport and haulage as we used to.

Are you not missing quotations there chap?

It was because Clarkson once said basically word for word (including horse comment) what you just wrote.

Oh right, i thought it was a fairly obvious analogy. The comment (if anywhere) comes from watching far too many discovery channel steam/history programmes, not clarkson :)

I thought I saw Jay Leno talking about a hydrogen fuel cell bmw, and used the words that Jez used? I can't remember who it was doing the interview, but they drank the 'emissions' didn't they?

OP, you not heard of biofuels? :p

I've driven a Tesla, and I think it's awesome the way it accelerates in near silence - just a slight noise from the motors as they spin up. I could get used to "electric" noise.
Everybody I know who has driven an EV has reported they were addictive. I think once they become mainstream the haterZ will shut up and actually enjoy them :p

If I hear someone driving along with the crazy frog song playing out of the back of their car I will drive them off the road and ****ing kill them.

With a good sound system in the far it wouldn't be hard to recreate your favourite engine sound, but even so there wouldn't be any gears so it would never sound right really...

I can live with a near silent electric whine just please no more crap like the Lotus effort that recreates a variety of engine sounds. Seriously I'm more convinced by the sound in Forza motorsport!

It was Leno who said it to Clarkson. I saw that episode being repeated the other day.

Surely all this depends on whether you believe the "fossil fuel" theory of oil and gas production? Can anyone point a link to proof that there are dinosaur remains in my fuel tank. :-)

Pretty much how I see it, though during the transition period, I wonder what will suffer first...oil used for fuel/transport, or oil used for plastics/manufacturing of plastic based products?

Neither. Plastics are already being synthesised from materials other than oil.
However, when oil for transport runs out, oil for plastics will run out as the oil for plastics and transport is obtained from the cracking process and/or fractioanl distillation of crude.

RE OP: Most engine notes are synth'd anyway and with advances in tech wouldnt be too hard to generate it on computer and feed it into a speaker system.
