Hey guys,

So at the minute I am a student with a laptop which all of my music is on. At present I have a crappy £10, two speakers setup that I simply plug into the front of my laptop - the headphones input jack.

Now. I don't really have the money to upgrade and get a PC which has a great soundcard and then buy a speaker setup system. Therefore, what is the best solution here....?

I don't really want to buy a 2.1 speaker system to simply plug into the headphone jack on my laptop - as i presume the sound won't be very good? I am not sure about this so please give advice... My laptop is just an acer laptop so there isn't a great soundcard in there...

Is there anyway that I can buy a hi-fi of somekind which connects into my laptop so i can play my music library on my laptop from the hi-fi?? Is this possible?

Thanks guys - appreciated :)

Hmm most probably you have some on-board Realtek solution for the solution. There are some external soundcard solutions. I am pretty sure that the Audigy2ZS line of card had some external solutions and there might be some others aswell. If you upgrade your sound card though and continue to listen to music through your current speakers you want listen much of a difference.
Getting an external soundcard and a nice set of 2.1 speakers if you only listen to music is the best deal in my opinion or depending on the connections features of the sound card even connect the HI-FI cables on it.
You might need to get some cables sometimes but you can get those at your local sound store.

if you have a hifi, why not just buy a 3.5mm to two phono and play from the laptop through the hifi's speakers?

Yup - the above is the barest answer for what you asked. £4 lead from a high st elec components place 3.5mm stereo to twin phono (which you hi-fi will almost certainly take) and your done.

For better sound production form the laptop end your looking at:

Audigy2ZS>USB soundcard>onboard in order good to bad.
