How can you justify a 2 grand gaming pc?

Hi lads :D

Right , before i make everyone in this forum an enemy who will want to place horse heads in my bed, let me say this 1st. I do like gaming on the old pc. I play CSS, BF2, BF2142, C&C 3 and a few others.

Ok, here we go :)

I have always wondered why people would bother spending say 2 grand on a gaming pc, which will be old in about 6 months to a year and will have to pay an extra 500 quid ish on upgrades to play the latest games on max gfx.

This seems absolutely stupid to me. Why for example would you buy a 300-600 pound gfx card (e.g 8800gtx/ultra) and then pay the extras such as a cpu for another 600 (top of the range) , when you could just buy an xbox 360/ps3 which would do the job just as good for a fraction of the price.

I know pcs do have the best gfx, but thats like a year after the xbox 360 came out * correct me if im wrong on this :) * and then its only slight.

Is the main issue not being able to use the mouse and keyboard for the xbox360/ps3?

Main reason im saying this is because i just got a xbox live gold membership and i can safely say, that the online mp is much better to pc imho.

Its because if you play a pc multiplayer game , BF2 for example - you will have a major advantage if you have a £2000 pc which runs the game fine, to a bloke who has a 9700pro and a pc spec to go with the card and lags all the time. One of the main factors you win is because you have more money to spend on luxuries such as a top notch pc.

This is where console MP is different. Everyone has the same spec. Everyone is the same. Everyone is at an equal level of chance of winning from the get go - the only determing factor of who is better is he who puts more time, practise and effort in. (not saying uber pc owners dont of course, but hopefully you can see where im coming from!)

Wouldnt you agree, for fair MP gaming in the future it should be the consoles who get the main focus?

Wow, seem to have gone slightly off topic, but it links in a way :D

Now im sure you all have some thoughts and feelings on the matter! lol

I have my pc still simply because I like keyboard & mouse for fps and while I haven't used ps3 online so can't comment on that , I don't think live is as good as pc online yet and has quite a way to go. Mainly the fact that most of it is P2P , rather than nice dedicated servers like pc games have and because of this the player counts are far to low. Most of the time 16 or so players , where the pc gets 32-64 on a lot of games.

I h8 using a game/joy pad for First person Shooters, i find them too slow and inaccurate, maybe im out of practice as i hadnt a console for 3 years ( now have a ps3 )

As for justifying spending out a ton of cash on a PC, i dont i build my own so i buy the main parts and then upgrade when i have the money for something new to future proof it, about the only thing i buy more than 1 a year could be gfx cards, been 3 so far this year.

And i play my PC more than i do my ps3, better games.

£2000 on a PC is for the extreme enthusiast who does have a large surplus income .
That sort of money is for people who want to game at silly resolutions like 2500x1000 or whatever it is .

My BFG 8800GTX along with a E6600 and a 24 incnDell 2407 have played every release so far totaly maxed out with no slow down at all , Hardly £2000 worth and it has been fine for nearly a year now . I see nothing on the horizon that is going to tax this system for a while . However I will upgarde once it does .

My rigg is also watercooled and OC'd to 3.3Ghz and reaches 12500 points in 3D 06. I have had it running at 3.6Ghz and the 8800GTX cloxked so i can get over 13,000 3d marks but BF2 hates an overclock and CTD's me at anything above my current OC .

I think your post may be in the wrong forum though ,, my rigg is about £1000 worth but Oc'd to nearly £2000 worth ,,,xbox ,WHATS AN XBOX

Really framerate isn't much of problem in multiplayer gaming, most people that are serious about multiplayer will either have a decent PC or lower the settings to get high framerates.

The biggest problem in multiplayer 'fairness' is probably the speed and quality of the players internet connection, and that problem exists on consoles too.

As for spending a lot of money on a PC when you could simply buy a 360 instead, I don't buy PC's just to play games. I buy it to play games, watch movies, listen to music, do my work which includes programming and 2D/3D artwork, browse the net...etc...etc

Additionally around 2 years after a generation of consoles the PC is usually way ahead so it's nice to be able to experience the very best gaming has to offer at the time. And there's some games that just aren't on consoles, so there's no other choice.
And you don't have to upgrade every 6 months, that's ridiculous. I went around 2 years with my last PC and managed to play everything at high res and high settings, all of which looked far better than anything consoles could do at the time.

I have my 360 for playing games that aren't on the PC, I have my PC to play games that aren't on the 360 or which would play better on my PC, and to do work, internet...etc and everything else.

I see nothing on the horizon that is going to tax this system for a while . However I will upgarde once it does .

I dont think that spec (even though its practically one of the best specs you can get - minus quad core) will handle crysis nicely (from what ive read from the MP beta thread) - so would you justify upgrading just for that one game?

Ill post this in the other gamin part of the forum too :D

I'll repost this, didn't spot it in this forum till now...

Right.

First of a top end PC currently with a 8800GTS, Core2Duo and 2GB Ram is about £600, this will look better than what a console at this time can do.

Secondly that is not really true it does not give a big advantage to the person with the higher spec, some fine but it's not that big a deal.

My PC was £850 and I justify the price because;

- It plays every file format under the sun
- I can do my college work on it
- I can do all my video and audio editing on it
- INTERNETS
- Custom maps
- Mod support for games
- PC games are cheaper
- Heaps of dedicated servers for online games that are new and old
- I can manage my iPod
- Keyboard & Mouse is always good
- The graphics are better, obviously
- I can download music, games, movies, TV shows (Since the UK schedule for my favourite shows is way behind the Americans)

I still have a 360 but if the game is online multi-format I usually opt for the PC version because of the dedicated servers.
Wouldnt you agree, for fair MP gaming in the future it should be the consoles who get the main focus?l
Erm...no why the hell?

Or they could do what they do currently and have them as seperate formats, which is working fine.

I'd rather have my PC than a console anyday, even if my PC couldn't play any of the latest games I'd rather have my PC, it does miles more and gives me far more entertainment than any of the current consoles ever will.

Wrong on so many levels, since when did PC versions of 360 games come out a year later? Aside from Gears but that was an exclusive deal IIRC.

Why do people have to compare consoles and PC's all the time? They are in a different league.

please don't feed the troll.

How many times we gonna have the console v pc arguement?

As for why people spend so much on PCs?

For the same reason as to who people buy BMWs when a 1.0 fiat panda would get you from A to B just the same.

Its easy to justify for me. I use it for song composition/graphics/work related etc, not just games.

So even if I wasn't a gamer, its very much in my interests to always have a high end PC to make eveything go smoothly and efficiently. Its kind of an all in one hobby/work/enertainment centre :)

a.) Wrong forum
b.) People can spend their money how they like.
c.) Jog on troll.

If all you wanted to do was make a thread about how good consoles are there's a whole forum for that, bye.

2000 isn't that much if you think about it i mean if you went down the nvidia route and a 30" dell youve got the best hardware and since the average wage in the uk is between 20-30 grand a year its a small sum to that figure (i know not everyone makes this but anyone in the know or at least mid 20's would be on something like this)

I don't think this is trolling, he has a opinion. Last gen I was on the PC side of the fence purely because the games I wanted to play were mainly on the PC or really shoddy ports. Now most AAA games come out on all formats. So yes I can build a PC that far outperforms the 360 or PS3, but I can't justify the cost to play games. I still play games on it, but as my system is pre-PCI-Express the costs compared to simply buying it on the 360 are hard to swallow.

Both sides of the coin have their benefit, it's just this gen I feel the 360 has more to offer me than the PC.

I spent £2k on a gaming PC 1.5 years ago and it still runs things max...

Actually for me it is simply the fact I can't use mouse and keyboard on a console. I think some of the console games look superb, but I'm lost without my trusty WASD.

When consoles get a mouse & keyboard, i could be talked into buying it :)
For now i have no problem justifying my 2000$ purchases in December.

Have another vote for the mouse+keyboard brigade. The only games I've ever enjoyed playing 'competitively' online are of the fps and rts genre, neither of which can be played properly with a gamepad.

a) Keyboard and mouse always wins over controller.
b) I earn a lot of money
c) I also use the PC for development and design work
d) My PC is a lot more multifunctional than a console
