How capable is the Nvidia 960?

Hey guys,

I have been trying to figure out what graphics card to get for the past few weeks since my 560ti died.

I was planing on getting a 970 but with the coil whine + memory problems I am a bit apprehensive about it.

Currently I have 2 monitors both @ 1680x1050 so its not as if i'm running 4k.

What is the general consensus with the 960, good card or should I still go with the 970 even though it has its drawbacks?
 
I wouldn't bother with the 960 tbh.

Have you considered waiting for the new cards to be released if you can wait that long?

What are the rest of the system specs?
 
R290 for £220 or so.

The 960 is a complete and utter waste of time and money. God knows what Nvidia were thinking to release a card to replace one that's actually better than the new one :confused:

The 970 is a great little card. If you're worried about memory problems as you put it, have a look at this article that someone posted up for more info.

My machine is a bit old but I don't see a reason to upgrade just now as it runs everything perfectly:

i7 920 @ 3.8ghz
3x2gb DDR3
256gb crucial m4 ssd
750watt corsair PSU
 
I'd personally stretch for a 970. The best card in that price range in my opinion. The memory thing is a complete non-issue until you start going 4K with AA on top. Read that Eurogamer article or even just watch the video. There's been a lot of scaremongering going on with no evidence to back it up.

Get a GTX 970

The GTX 960 has memory problems of it's own as it uses a 128bit bus which can strangle things a bit.

I own a couple of 960s and they are no where near as good as the bigger 9 series cards with minimum fps.

Sorry man. Recent tests show the 290 as the winner as soon as you step over 1080p.

Due to its structure the 970 is actually worse than the 290.

If you're on 1080p then yeah, get a 970, otherwise it's a total waste of money.

I've been looking at the 970 and 290 (like almost everyone). the results I saw a week ago (I will have to go find them again) showed the 970 better at 4K
 
Hmm I actually bought a GTX960 Strix. First gaming card in a while. I have to say I think its great. My previous card was a GTX670 2gb. The 960 is faster. Cooler. Less power. 1 monitor 1080p res with every detail maxed. I don't play FPS games though. Dawn Of War 2, Homeworld Remastered, World in Conflict, Company of Heroes 2.

I see people saying R9 290 etc But that is a hot power hungry card. Costs more to buy and to run.

Id say it depends on what games and what monitors. But for single 1080p screen, GTX960 is pretty darn good :-)
 
The 960 crippled opinion is interesting. As I was waiting to see if the 750 Ti gets updated, but apart from being bus powered it leaves question if any worthwhile performance gain over 7 series.
