How come games keep installing Direct X?

Recently ive installed the following

Super Meat Boy
Amnesia
Batman Arkham Asylum
Dragonage Origins
Civilisation 4
Battlefield Bad company 2

and out of these, practically every one installs direct x before I can play. Surely having the latest DX would stop this?

My understanding is that each game uses slightly modified libraries.

Ah right I see, that maybe explains it.

Its a pain in the backside though

, ive had to redownload most of my steam folder recently and the installs on some of the games have been annoying. Like batman installing Physx when Im on ATI

Yeh, Batman AA still needs Physx installed for it to run :/ even if you're on ATI.
