Well, i'm anticipating the arrival of my first xbox 360 this week. It's an elite, though i've no idea whether or not it's based the on the newer design.

I've noticed a lot of reports of red rings and dying 360's and i was just wondering really as to how common this actually is. I mean percentage wise, are we talking 5%? or 10%? Or more? Does anyone have any idea? Are there any measures i might be able to take to reduce the risk of my machine giving out on me?

I was considering having it standing vertically next to my pc tower.

if its an elite it should be ok as as far as im aware they have the new drives and fans in, which is why there better. i think if you get a premium prob about 50% of the older versions die if not more but any new ones have the new psu in with correct voltage so not as many die.
so if yours is brand new, you should be fine.

I've seen figures ranging from 10% to 33% but if it does die you just get it replaced, not a problem really.

Just don't be one of these people that gets through about 6 in a year!

god knows, i dont think we've seen any figures for quite a while. Definitely seems to be on the decrease though. I've had mind standing vertically next to my tower since launch and never had a problem though.

the old ones had a 33% failure rate the new ones with the smaller die and better heat sink is much less.

It doesn't really matter how many have failed for anyone else, it's not going to change whether yours does or not, you won't know until it happens.

err it does affect it a bit after all would you get on a roller coaster with a 95% mortality rate?

After all no matter how many others died it wont affect your chances...

Luck of the draw in all honesty. Still on my 1st from Dec05 and its still going strong. Be happy it's a great console, if it fails you have 3 years warranty with regards RROD.

yeah but there just people who think Nah it'll be ok if i leave my xbox on pause all night then all day while im at work / school. :p

Sorry to hijack this thread a bit but I have a quick question, and no one seems to reply in the sticky thread so I thought I would ask here first.

My Xbox was over a year old before I got the 3RROD, however I sent it off for a free repair and on xbox.com/support it said that my warranty status was 'Out of Warranty'

I checked it today, and it has been shipped back to me (not received it yet though) and it now says warranty status is 'In Warranty'

Do I have a brand new 12 month warranty now then?

EDIT: Ignore me, I just found out it has a Repair Warranty

# Device: Xbox360 Hardware
# Serial Number: XXXXXXXXXXXXX
# Warranty Status: In Warranty
# Warranty Type: Repair
# Warranty Start:
# Warranty Expiration: 7/10/2008 7:59:59 PM

Old figures were circa 33% newest figures say it is below 20% now. No-one knows for certain as all these figures are semi official Microsoft have never stated an exact figure although they have "agreed" with other estimates. Some people will have you believe that because people are not posting my 360 broke threads everyday that the issue is fixed. IT IS NOT FIXED IN ANYWAY, else why would Microsoft continue to pay for a 3 years RROD warranty? (Out of the goodness of their hearts ?)

One piece of advice (The rest is just subjective tbh), stand it horizontally. It definitley makes less noise when disc is spinning. Whilst it won't eleviate your RROD fears, it MAY stop it scratching/burning discs, which is another common issue.
