How comparable is RAM?

My MB takes non-ECC unbuffered memory. First thing I would like to know is does it really have to be that said kind or can I use any as long as it fits and the correct DDR?

Also if a ram is advertised as AMD motherboards only can the same ram be used on a Intel board?
