I have a standard terrible Talktalk router that isn't wireless and theirs 3 other computers in my house so I had to buy an ethernet hub and connect the other computers that way.

I still have a few spare ports in the hub and I'm wondering if theirs a way to send out a wireless signal so I can connect my laptop to it, without having to buy another router.

I was speaking to some one and he said it's possible by using a Wireless Access Point.

The description of the product says :

'108mbps Super-G Wireless Access Point (also compatible with 54mbps Wireless-G 802.11g and 11mbps Wireless-B 802.11b)

Allows you to connect your network wirelessly better than ever, easily and securely. Provides multiple security protection measures. Can be set to turn off wireless network name (SSID) broadcast so that only stations that have the SSID can be connected.

Complies with Super G 108mbps and the IEEE 802.11g/b standards and adopts 2x to 3x eXtended Range? WLAN transmission technology so that transmission distance is 2-3 times that of traditional 11g/b solutions, up to 855.36m. (When used with XR-compatible equipment; standard 802.11g range otherwise). Range extended to 4-9 times. Compatible with all IEEE 802.11g and IEEE 802.11b products.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a wireless access point with a single wired network (Ethernet) connection. It is not a full router.

Specification

* Super-G 108mpbs (when used with Super G compatible equipment)

If I buy one of those, how would they work? Would I just have to connect an ethernet lead from the hub into the wireless acces point?

Cheers

An access point will do it, to be honest though, Id rather buy a wireless router to replace your talk talk one.

Yeah I do need to do that, but I really don't feel like paying £70 just for a wireless router.

Is it possible to get any that aren't as expensive?

Cheers.

Do you have any 108mb wireless devices? If you don't then a 54G wireless access point or router will be fine.

Can get the Netgear AP on here for £50 but may as well just replace the Talktalk modem/router with a wireless version. Again a Netgear DG834 wireless router is £50. You can get cheaper models such as Belkin but they are cheap for a reason..

I don't really know much about networking and the likes, but what's the difference between a budget wireless router and an expensive one?

That is a Cable router for NTL/Virgin/Telewest cable customers. You need an ADSL Wireless router :)

If you have a router already you can just get a cable router and use your old router purely as a modem. This is cheaper than buying an ADSL router. You just need to make sure the DMZ on your old router points at the new wireless one. Fairly easy to do and could save you £20
