Cant remember it very well as i was kind young. Some care to sum it up please.

I fear manutd will be financially ruined becuase of the glazers! but well have to wait and see on that one

Wrong forum, kinda.

Similar thing happened to Sheffield Wednesday my club.

They ran in to debt, the club wasn't ran very well, and had to sell the decent players and as a result were in free fall.

Will probably get moved to another forum but (as far as I recall) ....

They really pushed the boat out on buying new players and paid well over the odds for some so-so players. They got to a Champions League semi but didn't qualify for Europe the next season. The loss of that money sent them into a bit of a downward spiral and it was compounded by not making it the season after either. They got relegated with some mediocre players on monster contracts and had to sell players off.

I'm sure a Leeds fan could give much more detail

Who did we pay over the odds for? Seth Johnson we did definitely.

Tomas Brolin and Roque Junior.

Indeed but Brolin was 96 :p

And to some it up, some little silly man called Peter Risdale got a bit mad with credit cards and gave O'Leary the money he wanted to bring in players, Rio Ferdinand, Robbie Keane, Mark Viduka, Seth Johnson, Robbie Fowler, etc etc, we didn't actually sign that many players, but they were very big contracts. A lot of squad was from our youth or bought before the downfall.

Roque Junior was a WC winner, worst player I've seen in a United shirt

He was 7m actually.

A bit overpriced but the fact he was injured throughout his whole career and on 40k that made him one of the worst signings ever.

Just looked up a bit more. The thing that started this downward spiral was they secured big loans against the revenue for the tv rights, however the following season they finished fifth and didnt get into the champions league and it all started to go wrong from here

I can't remember the exact figure, but didn't we have something like 10 loan players by the time we finally went down?

10 players knowing they weren't going to play for us once the season ended and didn't really care about the club at that point meant disaster (i think i remember hearing something like that from an interview with eddie gray, theres a 10minute long interview with him about this somewhere on the skysports site from last year)
