How did you become left-wing?

Growing up in the shadow of Thatcher was reason enough. My contempt for most of (but not quite all) mainstream right-wing dogma holds no bounds.

However, for a lefty, I despised the direction Nu-Labour went so soon after getting in to power. So much so, I'll never vote for them again.

Seems like nearly everyone on here subscribes to the ideas of "democratic socialism", outright socialism, or full blown communism.

Serious question, how did you come to have left-wing leanings (if you have them)? Where did you learn about it and what made you believe in it? Not saying it's wrong, I just want to know how this happened.

School?
Parents?
Friends?
TV?
Your own research?

Who would you say formulated this belief system in your mind?

You're joking, right? This forum is basically the Daily Mail of online forums.

Where does Kwerk come from? He says he is from the states but yet sometimes with the way he posts you could swear he was sitting in the UK.

Also if he is from the states did he really come on at what 7am or earlier to start this thread?

Something is not right i tell ya!

There are massive douches in power on both sides. I think I swing a bit to the right these days but people like Boris Johnson make me ill (even when he's right :p)

However truly left wing people scare me too. Amongst all these riots I've spoken to people who are claiming that "society has failed them" and that we should increase their benefits (lol).

Truly it seems we've bred a generation of people to be completely dependent on benefits, and the true lefties don't seem to see a problem with this...

Growing up I had mostly left wing views, which I would attribute to being brought up by my father who was very anti tory and my grandfather who was pretty much a communist.

I've since drawn my own conclusions and will just vote for the party/MP who I feel represents my views best.

To be honest though, I'd much prefer to have some sort of meritocracy; politics is becoming a lot more like X-Factor. :(

The UK conservatives are NOT right wing. They are probably left of the US democrats actually.

When I start hearing them chat about:

  • putting troops on the border with shoot to kill orders for illegal immigrants.
  • sterilizing poor people
  • ending 90% of welfare
  • legal gun carrying
  • legal assault rifles and handguns
  • ending VAT and stuff like that
  • ending the BBC
  • pro death penalty
  • banning abortion

That's what I'd consider right wing and what I hear every day normal people advocating where I live.

I read today about a lady in Saudi Arabia who got acid thrown in her face and the prison system was going to BLIND her attacker in prison as punishment, at her choice. She had a choice of him getting a life-sentence, death or BLINDING. Can you imagine ANYONE calling for that law in the UK?

I think it's great BTW.

As far as I'm concerned if you look at history, the world as it is and the country we live in, only a complete moron can subscribe to left wing economic views. It doesn't work, end of.

I was a raving right winger, might is right, libertarian esq, Tory.

Then I got a degree in Politics and suddenly "common sense" Daily Mail style opinions seemed such a silly thing to be basing views on and started dealing with facts and peer reviewed research and it became clear that not only are the left of centresih people demonstratively correct they are demonstratively more intelligent.

Once you start arguing with facts and figures, the left wins.

In short, I became educated. (also I watched and understood The West Wing)
