well guys i am planning on building my own machine, and i thought i would find out how some of your first builds went. so i would like to ask people to share the 1st time experiences with building a machine.

Please let us know if it went good or bad, and include the lovely details of what you managed to blow up with your first build.

thanks guys, look forward to hearing some fun stories.

It went fine, I just took my time and used common sense. It's a daunting task but it's a really really simple, every component is tailored to the next so you can't really put things in the wrong slots, just make sure nothing is shorting before you hit the power button.

Excellently, in fact it was the start of a tradition with me and my best mate always building our machines together. Mine was:

-Athlon64 3400
-2GB RAM
-250GB HDD
-GeForce 6800GT
-DFI LANParty UF (nF3 chipset iirc, still the best board I've ever had)

His was:

-Athlon64 3500
-2GB RAM
-GeForce 6800
-Asus Mobo (forget the model)
-250GB HDD
-Akasa Eclipse

I put the CPU in the wrong way around and it glowed red, I burnt the print from my index finger.

I was 14 and it was a 486 DX2 66. To be fair it wasnt really a first build from scratch more a take computer to pieces before there was internets and not have a clue how to put it back together again.

mine went fine, the biggest problem i had was accidentally sticking my cooler to its instruction manual. those sticky foam pads are a bugger to get off of paper

Connected the power light the wrong way round, but other than that it was fine.

Its the latter ones that cause me issues. It seems that every time I open my case something brakes, lol.

Mine went fine until, I unlocked the other cores on the cpu, tried to hit 4Ghz and boom! Might still be under warranty, will check up in the loft tomorrow :p

It's like the kind of jigsaw you would give an 8 year old. Just don't drink whilst you build it/over it whilst building it. You can't really get it wrong... Stuff should only fit where it's supposed to go. Watercooling is a bit more complex.
