How do fuel gagues work and how much to fix them?

I have a 306 HDi. I had my low pressure fuel pump replaces two weeks back at the dealership.

Now my guage is not working correctly. On a full tank where i've only done 100 miles it's showing as almost empty (hope it's broken or i've just leaked £40 worth of diesel!).

It also acts erratically now and again. Hopefully the garage will admit it was something not done correctly when they changed the low pressure fuel gague (or are they not connected?).

So how much are they to fix? expensive? time consuming?

Thanks for any advice.

There usually a device bit like a dipstick/toilet ball **** that is inserted into the tank. This(the fuel sender) has an electrical connector on the top that feeds the signal to your clocks. You can usually get at the sender by lifting the rear seat bench. They are also usually very expensive ie many 100's of pounds for a new one. All though price depend on car and availability of used spares.

Hmm interesting, the rear seat bench is where the low pressure fuel pump is - which they changed two weeks ago. I'm hoping they damaged it when they changed it and I don't have to pay tons to get it fixed.

Thanks for the info

I have the same fuel gauge issue, pain aint it, im gonna do some home tom-fiddlery on it in the next few days and ill let you know how it goes, i reckon mine is repairable i think the float just gets stuck randomly which should be fixable

Altho i cant be sure on account of yours being a diesel, on mine the LP Pump and sender unit are integrated.
