How do I achieve 3840x2160 (4K) @ 60Hz???

Hello Everyone

I have spent the best part of a week searching the web via google and online retailers looking for an answer to this. I'm hoping somebody out there has already been in this position and worked it out. I have bought myself a 4K TV, LG 49UB850V. It's a cracking TV and has really impressed me so far with the upscaling it does on Blu Rays and Netflix (roll on actual 4K access to Netflix later this year). What I really bought this TV for though is my PC as I use my PC as a multimedia centre as well as a gaming rig. I have an adequate card to support 3840 x 2160 resolution at 60FPS (an AMD HD7990 which only has Mini DP and DVI out ports) and have thrown Batman Arkham Origins at it and it was running at 55-58 FPS whilst I played. However, I experienced screen tear which I thought was unusual. So I put vertical sync on and with FRAPS I saw my FPS was capped to 30Hz.

Now, I'm not technically stupid, I built this PC myself and have a good understanding of how things work. The LG TV came with a HDMI 2.0 lead which supports 4K up to 60Hz, this is being used, cable therefore removed from the equation or possible cause. Next is the input port, in this case, HDMI socket 3 which the instruction booklet told me to use. This is the only socket that will support 4K up to 60Hz. Check, this also can be knocked off the list. The GPU is clearly capable as well and was achieving greater than 30FPS, so the only thing remains is the Mini DP to HDMI adaptor that came with the 7990. I've looked everywhere and cannot find an adaptor that supports 4K up to 60Hz. I've also looked for a straight for a Mini DP to HDMI 2.0 cable, no luck there either. I believe that Mini DisplayPort along with HDMI 2.0 are the only sources able to support 4K at 60Hz, so why would my current adaptor not be capable of supporting this? Also, why are all the adaptors I see online also only showing 4K up to 30Hz?

In a nutshell, I would really appreciate it if somebody could tell me where I can find a suitable adaptor or cable or advise if I'm doing something wrong with the TV itself. So far, LG haven't been very helpful and their first response was just that 4K technology is very new and there may not be anything that currently supports the technology in the UK. I quickly responded to such a ridiculous comment, surely they can't be selling TV's without the necessary cable support!

Thanks for your time and for taking the time to read this thread.

Don't forget the 7990 has been out for a while and the included adapter is likely DP to HDMI 1.4, which obviously won't support the same resolutions/refresh rates as the newer HDMI 2.0 standard.

You would have thought LG would at least have a ridiculously overpriced cable they could sell you, might just have to wait. :(

The hdmi ports on GPU's, including the version that gets used via the display port or Dvi when using an adaptor, is only 1.4 which does not support 60hz

You would need an active DP to Hdmi 2.0 adaptor, but I have not yet seen or heard of one being made - they simply don't exist yet

Currently the only way to get 60hz on a TV or monitor from a PC is to use a Tv that has a Displayport input, there is only one by Panasonic and it still has awful input lag which makes it unsuitable for gaming

It is bonkers, but there are no sources that have hdmi 2.0 outputs, so sticking only hdmi 2.0 on a TV is pointless, basically you cant game on a 4k TV and there arent any movie playing devices you can connect to it either

Unless theres a way to drive it via 2x 30Hz HDMI signals (doesn't seem like it supports MST) your pretty much out of options at the moment like andy said.

Thanks for all your help with this everyone. I have come to the conclusion that I need to do one of two things to get my PC running at 60Hz with this new UHDTV.

1) Get a HDMI 2.0 compatible GPU (none yet released)
2) Get a Mini DP to HDMI 2.0 adapter (none yet released)

I think I'm just in a position where I'm a little ahead of the game with this TV, even though 4K TV's have been out for a while now. Maybe now they're becoming more affordable, we'll see some of the above tech come out.

Cheers, Adam

I'm in the same boat. Strange isn't it, usually GPUs have been ahead of any TV advancements.

Update

Hi everyone

I've got an update to this issue. Belkin have since released a 4K UHD ready mini dp to hdmi 2.0 adaptor. This can be seen below on the link.

http://www.belkin.com/uk/p/P-F2CD024/

I've purchased this, plugged it into my 7990, then attached my hdmi 2.0 lead and plugged into port 3 on the 4K TV (this is the hdmi port that supports 4K at 60hz). Sorted? Nope. I'm still capped at 30 fps. I can't understand it, my 7990 does have mini dp 1.2, 4k UHD at 60hz capable. The Belkin adaptor has mini dp 1.2 to hdmi 2.0, 60hz 4K capable. The LG provided hdmi 2.0 cable, 4K 60hz capable and this goes into port 3 of my LG 49UB850V TV, 4K 60hz capable yet no joy!

I've gone into my res settings on Windows and the CCC for my gpu and I can't go past 30hz. Now we have updated accessories that should be capable, does any psu have experience with this and have they finally gotten around it? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated, I'm really getting annoyed by this now.

Thanks, Adam

Btw I've flagged this with LG, Belkin and AMD. All I've had so far is the following from Belkin.

Dear Mr. Adam C. Lee,

We are sorry if you may have not received our reply last 8/3/2014 at 2:30 PM.

Allow us to provide you the information stated on our last reply.

Based on our research, the Mini DisplayPort™ to HDMI Adapter 4K/Ultra HD Compatible supports 60 FPS video playback at 4k resolution.

The Mini DisplayPort™ to HDMI Adapter supports Full HD (1080p), as well as Ultra HD (4K) displays. It also supports HDMI 2.0 Technology, which increases bandwidth from 10.2 Gbps to 18 Gbps.

NOTE: To take advantage of 4K resolution, your connected device must have a Mini DisplayPort 1.2 or be Thunderbolt™ 2 technology ready.

The product supports the following computers:

• MacBook Air
• MacBook Pro
• MacBook Air 11”
• MacBook Air 13”
• MacBook Pro 13”
• MacBook Pro 15”
• MacBook Pro 17”

We hope this response has sufficiently answered your questions.

Sincerely,

Vi Marie

To which I've replied...

Please find attached to this email a link to my graphics card. If you scroll down and click on specifications, you'll see that this graphics card comes with display port 1.2 ready which is what you're telling me below.

http://products.xfxforce.com/en-gb/Graphics_Cards/AMD_Radeon™_HD_7990/FX-799A-6NF9

I have pasted this section below for you, it shows display port 1.2 and that the outputs for that are the 4 mini display ports on the card.

Display Output

Display Port ready : 1.2

Dual link Support : Y

Output - DL-DVI-I : 1

Output - mini DP : 4

This is why I can't understand why I'm still not able to achieve 60hz.

Thanks, Adam

^^ You need a thunderbolt port to get HDMI2.0 using it.

(The mention of Mini DisplayPort 1.2 in the correspondence is misleading - it will get you 4K 30Hz but not 60Hz - you need thunderbolt to get HDMI2.0 functionality).

Any chance you could talk me through how you achieved 3840*2160? I have a similar LG TV but my CCC says the max reported resolution is 1920*1080 and im not able to select any resolution higher than 1080p!

Did you have to do anything in your television settings to allow 4k resolutions? I have a similar TV and CCC is claiming the maximum supported resolution is 1920*1080....?
