How do I add an american number to whatsapp?!

So, I have a friend that came from the U.S and still uses an american number for her whatsapp. its 10 digits long..but what area code do i put before it, so i can add it as a contact and message her on whatsapp?
 
The first 3 numbers are the area code...just add +1 in front of the 10 numbers.

They don't have a 0 at the start.

you don't add a number to whatsapp, you add the number to your contacts on your phone, and she will be in your whatsapp contact list.

So what if my guys number is 973-797-9472 and I'm from the UK and this is a US number. I added +1 and still doesn't work.
