How do I apply for college?

To cut a long story short, in my last year of school I had a few issues which led me into not getting any GCSE's. I lost my confidence and didn't attempt to join a College. I'm now 20 years old and since my last temp job finished in December, I've been out of work and it doesn't seem like I'm going to get a job any time soon.

I'd really like to get some GCSE's along with learning some new skills. I think college would be the best place for this? I have no idea where to start with it all though.

As I'm no longer 18, would I have to pay for any college course I take? Do I just go down to my local college and ask about enrolling?

Ring your local college up first and ask about enrollment dates and conditions. I went straight from school and remember having to go on a specific day with my national record of achievement + proof of grades etc to get onto the A levels I wanted. However my cousin is in the same position as you and she rang them up prio to going down to see how much it would cost and what she needs to bring along etc.

As above, give the college student services a ring and enquire about how it all works for you situation. I went back to school at 20 and it was a simple process. I even got a bursary from the college as it was an entry level course, I'm not sure how it works down there though. Just give them a ring :)

I think ALG remains unaffected, and the first time thing rings true. You need to contact the college that provides the course you want to do, really, they will advise you on enrolment and financial support.
 
As others have said you should get you first tier of higher education paid for (GNVQ, AS level, NVQ level 2) AFAIK.

When i did my level 2 in plumbing there were guys of 30+ getting it paid for. I had to pay for mine as i was over 19 and already had my 'allowance' in higher education
