Can't work it out...do i just pull at it slightly and hook it into a nail? Just doesn't seem like that would keep secure?

Yes, you pull it out slightly, put a pin head nail in the wall and it will sit in one of the grooves![]()

Also, any ideas about securing 91 x 61 cm wooden frames without nails? I think the wall is too thin to put a nail in it.
Too thin to use a nail? So is it plasterboard? If so, use some of these:
