Hi everyone, i would like to know how i go abouts making a server to host games like BF2 ! Can i use my computer aswell as the server on my home connection ? and what about hosting my own website at the same time ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, firstly, to get any kind of decent speed from the webserver, or any decent amount of concurrent connections to the game server, you're going to need one hell of an internet connection. Something with multiple Mb of upstream bandwidth, and preferably a connection on a very low contention ratio. A business grade SDSL line would probably be advisable if you want the gaming server to be usable at all for more than about 3 players.

Secondly, you can use as many hosts (game servers, webservers, mail servers, FTP servers, etc etc etc) on your connection as you like, but a standard ADSL+ line probably won't cut the mustard upstream bandwidth wise.

Like Paradigm says, unless you have a decent upload rate, then you will have trouble. Game servers themselves are easy to install / configure, just go to the relevant site for the game you are hosting.

you might be better going to a game server company for a dedicated server box.

I recommend ones like multiplay.co.uk, killercreation.co.uk, tigit.co.uk

There are really cheap hosts available but they usually have crap support or cease to exist one day, taking your money with it.

Multiplay and killercreation are the uk's ranked provider for the BF series.

I recently moved our clans BF2 server from Multiplay (due to poor support issues) to Jolt.
Jolt support caused us 31 hours of downtime in the first 10 days caused by them trying to resolve an issue that made the server unplayable. We then moved to Rackage...... great server but it was consistantly not sending points back to the master servers! We've been eyeing up Killercreations as our next port of call.

I Hosted A Website & FTP And Home Once, Never Again, Could Never Get On The Net, That Was On 10MB Cable! Like People Said Its The Upload Bit!

As others have said, it's not really practicle to host your server at home because of the limit on upload speed.

If you really want to host your own server, your best bet would be to get a cheap rack server and to co-locate it. You can get co-location for a single box for about £40/month although make sure you get a server that has good power efficiency or this will push the price up.

If you are planning to host games like BF2 then I'd strictly recommend you to opt for a Dedicated server. Don't consider your computer to run such games. You will not be satisfied and in the end you might give up. If you wish to have a good experience with such games then make sure you opt for a full fledge dedicated server.

You'll need a reliable internet connection with a solid upload speed, AND a fairly beefy rig. However, for a server, you won't need a powerful graphics card at all, even onboard would be ample. Look for a fast CPU though, and a decent chunk of ram (2 or 4gig). However, as said, all this will go to waste if you don't have sufficient upload (for a small server, 1mbit upload MINIMUM. Bethere or O2 broadband could do this at a price level to compete with renting a server)
