How do I buy safe on the Internet Net

Hi there, being from the older generation I've never really trusted buying by credit or debit card over the Internet. Although after comparing online prices with shop, I'm beginning to realise how many cost savings I'm missing.

Can someone please inform what I need to do to buy safe online?
