How do I cast spells in HOMM 5?

The lack of a manual doesn't help, can anyone tell me how do I cast spell's? I am on the 3rd chapter of the 1st campaign and I am still not able to cast spells. When I view my spellbook it is empty? Where am I going wrong?

You need to build a Mage tower while you're in a town, then buy a spellbook with your hero who's there (go into the mage tower so to speak while your hero is 'docked') if you didnt already. Been something pretty much like that as far as I remember back in HoMM.

It might not be exactly like that, but it gives you a rough idea of what to do

Ah, I thought I was missing something. It doesn't help you don't get much in the way of any manual or any tutorial with this game. I kept acquiring all these special abilities in the campaigns but when it came to battle I couldn't use any magic. I just started chapter 3 of the 1st campaign last night and saved at that point. I probably can build a mage tower now. Or probably not.
