How do I change the headlamp bulb?

I've just been under the bonnet on my 97 Escort 1.6i but couldn't work out how to change the bulb, anyone know how?

I think there should just be a metal spring type thing which you need to squeeze inwards then move it away from the bulb and the rest should be as natural as wiping your backside.

The bulb connector is what is confusing me now, I've managed to get into the bit where the bulb goes but there is a connector I can't get off, the manual says to twist it a quarter of a turn, which I've done then it says press is a wire clip, which I can't see, I've looked on both sides of the car and each side is different lol.

I can't really take a pic but the connector is a black unit with wires on top, which apparently you twist and pull to reveal the bulb but it won't budge and the manual says there is a wire clip but I can't see it. The otherside of the car doesn't have this black connector, instead its just a bunch of wires with a wire clip holding in what I think is the bulb.
