How do I change the multiplier on the Asus P5E

Hello.

I purchased a QX9650 and an Asus P5E motherboard. Obviously, I want to do a bit of multiplier-unlocked overclocking, but I can not see an option for changing the multi in the bios.

Anybody know where it is?

There are two places to find the multiplier options actually. The first is in the AI Tweaker menu (you have to set AI Overclock Tuner to manual) and then set the CPU Ratio Control to whatever you want it to be. The second is in the Advanced CPU Configuration Settings menu and is again CPU Ratio Control.

Thanks.

This new P5E is like a blast from the past for me. The American Megatrends bios is similar to the one used in my P4C800E. My last build used an nVidia 680i, and the bios was so much more conservative and sensible!

I like this board though.

Do you think that this would be a better board to get over the P5K Premium?? I'm going to buy a new motherboard soon to replace my EVGA 680i, in preparation for a q9450, so which do you think would be the better bet?

The P5E is a fantastic board now that we have a decent bios. Easily gets a quad to 3.8Ghz and a Wolfdale to 4.5Ghz. With the Wolfie i managed a fsb of 520 but people over at XS have been getting 540+. Pity the Wolfdale itself was so rubbsh. There is also the benefit of the two pci-e 2.0 full speed 16x lanes if you intend to go crossfire in the future. If you can get it for a good price (£125 or so, like i did) then get this one. No Wi-Fi or lcd post display, not that it's really needed.

The P5K is also a fantastic board though. Both have their plus and minus points. Personally i have'nt used the P5K so don't know how good it is at clocking a quad.

Mmm now you've got me thinking! I was set on the P5K Premium, but now I might have to rethink. Is the P5E just the same as the Maximus Formula with a few less bells & whistles?

Yeah, it's a great board. I have my QX9650 sitting at 4Ghz just now (10x400). I could probably push it further, but why bother?

How far have you pushed the fsb on that board, because with an 8x mult on the q9450, I'll need to get it high to get a good overclock. Will need 450 to get 3.6, which would be very nice. I know the q9450's overclocking abilities are a bit of an unknown at this point, but hopefully 3.6 should be possible.

Must admit, I'm leaning towards the x38 over the p35. Do you think that the extra features on the Maximus Formula are worth the extra money?

Yes. Even says Maximus Formula under the P5E sticker. The max i had with my Q6600 was 450Mhz but with my E8500 it was 520Mhz (this was'nt the max the board is capable of, just the point at which i go fed up testing). Others have gone way past 540 though.
