a laptop has been given to me, it hasnt been formatted or anything. it is running xp pro sp2.

when i turn it on i am presented with a similar window

unlocknonw.jpg

every time i want to log on i have to delete the old users name (e.g andersow) and put in my own, its getting anoying now.

i thought at first i had to change the name of the user under users in control pannel, so i did, that didnt work, i then thought i had to change the name of the person the laptop was registered to so i changed that in the registry, restarted and that didnt work either.

how do i go about changing the name from e.g. 'andersow' to my own name

If you don't want to have to log in,

start --> run --> controll userpasswords2

untick the box titled "users must enter a username and password..."

you'll have to add the username and password of who you want to log in as by default.

OR

If you want to have to log in, just change the default username:

open regedit, go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

change the "Default user" (or "defaultusername" - i forget) value to your user of choice...
