How do I combat spam emails?

Hi all

I use Thunderbird for my email client, but lately I'm getting loads of spam mail. Thunderbird is doing an OK-ish job but I still find myself having to specifically say "yes this is junk" on a daily basis. I've been running the junk mail filter for the last few weeks.

I looked in the useful freeware sticky at the top of this section, and found an application listed called SpamBayes. Is this good? Or can anyone recommend anything else that is perhaps newer? I know that these things take time to "learn" but I'm just wondering if there is anything out there that works a bit better. :)

Thanks for any help, tips or pointers.

ARGH! What have I done..... I went to train this application and all of my emails have vanished! Why has this happened!

Hmmm ok ok... spent a bit more time, managed to get it on, but I can't receive emails.

Does anyone run this with Thunderbird that could help? It prompts me for the password for the account, but when I enter it I get a message saying:-

"Sending of username did not succeed. Mail server localhost responded: undefined is a unsupported domain."

Hmmmmmmmm!!

EDIT: Apparently I should enter the Domain Name as my username... tried this and it repeats the same message but instead of "undefined" it puts in the domain name I enter. Still confused!
