how do i convert music to mp3 format?

Hi all

I've just picked up a garmin satnav for my bike, it'll play mp3 which is a bonus

But how would i convert the music i have on my windows media player to mp3 format?
Any help is much appreciated as always

so i have to put the music onto a cd first? or can i just change the format?

Are you sure the files aren't already mp3s?

Yeh i'd put them onto the pc via windows media center from the original cd's. I have some mp3 on a disk i'm moving to the garmin now, will see if that works..... I suppose i could burn a few cd's then bang em onto the satnav like this!
Seems like such a dumb question to have to ask but it's not really something i've ever given much thought!

if you allready have the audio files on your PC then you could use something like Goldwave or Audacity to convert them to .mp3 format. It would save you having to create some CD's just to rip the songs off again

with both the above you will need the Lame MP3 encoder on your system somewhere http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Lame_Encoder.htm
