How do I create custom themes from scratch?

Browsing around I have been inspired (!) by some of the custom themes created for UCCW, Apex Launcher and other launchers/theme loaders.
Especially some on this site:

I understand (I think) how to add themes already created by other users but how were these themes created originally?


Looking at them I guess it relies on creating a mix of images and custom icons which are then added and linked to apps etc?

Any help, how-to guides would be appreciated as I would like to have a go at one.

all of the mycolourscreen shots have explanation of what is used to achieve the look so you can actually put it together

but you need a custom launcher
