How do I diagnose router problem without modem as a variable?

Title says it all really. I think I might have a problem with my router but I can't rule out the awful superhub. Are there any tests I can run that'll conlusivly narrow down connection issues to the router?

The nature of the fault.

On average, my wireless connection completely drops at least five or six times a day (probably more but I don't want to risk exaggerating). Usually the issue can be rectified by running the Windows connection troubleshooter. When the troubleshooter doesn't fix the problem then that's usually when there's also a connection problem to my wired computers. Either the connection becomes extremely slow and pinging 8.8.8.8 results in ping times of 4000ms+ (sometimes with 20% or so packet loss), or I can't get a connection at all. In which case the pings time out and I get 100% packet loss (I know that's pretty obvious).

Earlier today, whilst I was having connection problems (no wireless or wired connection). I tried connecting the laptop (the wireless device) directly to the superhub via Ethernet, which gave me a good connection that maxed out the speed I should get from my ISP and showed 0% packet loss. So the modem (at that time at least) was running normally. So I tried reconnecting the router (which I had left powered on) to the modem and connecting to the router via ethernet. Still no connection so I decided to go belt and braces eliminating the modem as the problem and power cycled just the modem. The laptops wired connection to the router started working but the wireless was still not working!

This time a I reset both the modem and router and everything is back to normal for the time being. I'm at a loss as to what to do next. I feel like I'm chasing my tail.

Take the superhub out of modem only mode, is your issue cured?

Good suggestion. I'll give it a go but as the issue is intermittent, it might take some time to get a clear indication of whether it's the modem at fault. I should edit my original post to include some information on the nature of the fault.
 
Talk about timing... my connection when down so I tried connecting to the modem directly first using my laptop and then my PC and couldn't get a connection, I then reset the modem and connected the laptop. I was able to get a connection on the laptop but not the PC (that I plugged in without resetting the modem). So I reset the modem again (with the PC still connected) and I was able to get a connection although I was getting 47% packet loss and very poor speeds.


[EDIT] I'm trying the superhub in router mode. Is there any way of testing the router by itself save it just sitting there whilst I wait for the superhub to play up?
