Running XP Pro SP2.

When I start the PC, it loads up to a screen where I have to log on, which is pointless as there is no password and I'm the only user listed.

It doesnt go to the "Welcome" screen with the user icons, just shows a blue background with a small rectangular Windows XP box in the middle with my name and a space to type the password into ( there is no password ), so I just click "ok" and it loads up my desktop.

How do I get it so that this is bypassed and XP just starts when I boot up without me having to click on anything?.

Either Start > Run > 'control userpasswords2'- option in menu box displayed or alternatively download TweakUI from Microsoft which has an autologon feature :)

erm im shure u can just have one acount with no password and it will auto logon although i mby rong

:) Easiest way is Control Panel - User Accounts. Then you should see a box labeled "Change the way users log on and off" click that and just tick "use the welcome screen" and "fast user switching"

But that wont solve his problem if he has updated all the files from Microsoft update, he wants to boot to desktop without having to click on a name.

Putting "control userpasswords2" into the "run" screen will solve the problem

Edit:

1. At a command prompt, type "control userpasswords2" and press Enter to open the Windows 2000-style User Accounts
application.
2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer check box and then
click OK.
3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user name and password for the account you want to be
logged on each time you start your computer.

just make sure in future you update framework 1.1 then all the updates for that then framework 2.0 then all the updates for that. if u do it 2.0 first you will hav this problem!

I can't see where on earth your coming from mate, never had a problem with those updates causing login problems or prompting when it wasn't required.

I have had this problem ever since I downloaded an update. Can't remember which one tho. Ive bene lookin for a fix, so Im glad I found this thread.

Ill try stuff when I get home.

If you install the .NET Framework 1.1 (I think) then this starts happening - there's a service pack or fix that should also be downloaded by automatic updates that fixes the problem. (This is obviously an alternative to using the Autologon in tweakUI)

T'is true though. .NET 1.0/1.1 (can't remember which) added a user ASP.NET which broke the automatic login (as there's now more than one other user, just ASP.NET doesn't show up). Some update fixes it, but if you install .NET 2.0 first then it doesn't get fixed.
