My set up

PC downstairs

Room 1 upstairs and Room 2 upstairs.

A PC in all 3 rooms.

Room 1 has the main ADSL router and there is a network wire going to Downstairs and Room 2 to provide internet.

I want to move the ADSL Router downstairs. As there isa network cable already going from Room one to downstairs I just have to ocnnect the telephone wire to the router downstairs which is doable.

The only problem is that there is no wire going from Room 2 to downstairs and it will be impossible at the moment to make one go there. Therefore Room 1 will have direct access to downstairs but room 2 will not

My question.

Can I have the router downstairs serving room 1 and downstairs. It comes up to room 1 which then splits off the signal into room 2? Can a hub do this?

The key is I wnat a splitter device that does not rely on external power.... I wnat to move the current router downstairs as the plug is always on whereas in room 1 it is not and so when the router is off the other 2 rooms cannot get internet

hope that makes sense...

I'm not sure if there is a device that will split the connection, let alone without a power source.

You could get a 5 port switch and have that sat inside room 1. A cable from the router downstairs goes to port1 on the switch, then an ethernet cable from the switch to room 1 PC, and a cable to room 2 PC.

Both hubs and switches require an power from a plug socket, so if you plug them into a socket that wont always be on then it wont be too helpfull. One thing you could use is some netgear powerline devices, basicaly they use your houses electrical wiring to transmit data.

You could plug 1 into a plug socket in the room with the router, with a ethernet cable going between it and the router, and then have another in a room 2 plug socket, with a cable going from that to the room 2 PC. you can either use another in room 1, or use the existing cable thats already going between downstairs and room 1
