hi

my main os is windows 7 but i want to dual boot windows 10 via another hard drive so i dont have to get rid of windows 7 if possible? ive seen a lot of things on google but most ways are so different. Please can someone tell me which the preferred way is please?

thanks for any help :)

As you have two drives attached to your system you can almost certainly do what you want to do by pressing either the "Delete" or the "F2" key when booting your system - BEFORE WINDOWS LOADS - and changing the boot priority in the BIOS - this will not change again until you repeat the selection.
You may also be able to press the "F12" key instead and choosing which drive you want to boot from - this will not alter the boot priority in the BIOS.

I have used both approaches as I move from Windows 7 to the Windows 10 marketing tool :(

As a matter of interest, I am sure that there is a means of doing this on a single drive (as I have previously done using LILO with Windows and Linux) but I have never explored it

I think you have to alter the autoexec.bat file for this so you get the options when booting up. The more cumbersome way is to set the boot order in the bios for the drive you want to boot from.

There should also be an F key shortcut like F12 or F10 when booting up which allows you to quickly select the drive you want to boot from without having to go into the bios.

I did it with Linux a few months ago. I'm old fashioned so I disconnected my main OS drive and connected the drive I want to install the OS on. Installed it and then you can simply press F12 (or whatever key your BIOS is) to choose which drive to boot from.
