I've never managed to damage a component through static discharge, I use to be really paranoid about it too with the wrist strap and whatnot, don't bother now. Like others have said just touch the bare metal on the case every so often and handle components properly.
A non magnetic cross screwdriver is about all you should need.
Make sure that the psu is in the case and that the case is plugged into the mains (but not turned on). This means the case is earthed. Not as simple as just touching the case . . . .
If you walk about a lot on a carpet with socks on, you can build up static electricity If you're wear rubber soled shoes it's not so much of an issue. In either case you should touch a metal object such as a radiator to discharge any static charge you have built up before commencing work.
You should avoid wearing any synthetic material clothing. Acrylic seems to be the worst material known to man for generating static.
Ground yourself on the metal of the case before unplugging the PC from the mains, then move it onto a wooden table if you have one. Also try not to touch any contacts on any components whilst you're at it and you should be fine.
Your fine using a magnetic screwdriver. The magnets are not that strong.
