for ages i have been using an external hard drive http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?hl=en&q=hard+drive&cid=11281922012113801362&ei=QIgLTanqKYToiQTut7CqCg&sa=title&ved=0CDAQ8wIwBzgA#p to store all of my documents etc so that my laptop is as empty as it can be to optimise its running speed etc etc. this is now starting to annoy me. is there a way to just increase the memory of the laptop itself? it would seem from my searches http://www.twenga.co.uk/dir-Computers,Laptop-accessories,Laptop-memory that you can buy a new memory chip and replace the old one, now i dont pretend to really know anythng about the insides of maptops, thats why im here so im sorry if this sounds a little wrong... what would you recommend i do?

You can get memory for laptops have a look on the clocker website. I am not to familar with upgrading laptops so best to wait and see if someone else has to say on the matter.

Hi there, welcome to the forums :)

Would you be able to tell us the make and model number of the laptop? Also, how much RAM is currently installed and what operating system it is running (32bit or 64bit)?

Ahhh yes a far more useful input why do I not think of the nice easy stuff like this

u seem to be speaking about harddrive space in the 1st post , why would u then switch it to memory? wouldnt it be an internal harddrive u would be wanting instead of memory? or both

Hes confused. I think hes referring to memory as the amount of data storage space he has but is under the impression that it is stored on chips.

OP, you need a bigger hard disk. what is the model of your laptop? Also, leaving your current hard disk empty dosen't really optimise its speed in any appreciable way.

I agree with you. A lot of people seem to make the same mistake. They refer to hard drive capacity as "memory" Obviously when they google laptop memory, RAM pops up.

It is quite a common mis conception that storing a lot of files on the laptop slows it's performance down. So storing it on an external hard drive is somehow better for the laptop. If that was the case then laptops wouldn't come with hard drives in excess of 20GB. Don't be afraid to store whatever you like on your hard disk. Use the space up, that's what it's there for. Only use the external drive when you run out, or need the data to be accessed easily from wherever.

If you do wan't to upgrade the "memory" hard drive capacity of the laptop, then you need to fit a larger hard drive to the inside of your laptop. By the sounds of it, I wouldn't recommend you tackle this job on your own and I'd get a friend who is competent or a shop to do it for you.

Internal laptop hard drives can be had from ocuk for £40 (250GB) It will store loadsssss of stuff for you.

wow the op is confusing, by the sound of it you don't have much knowledge on computer hardware so as said above i would get your local pc shop to fit another hard drive for you
